Sleeping out Cwm Lloer and Cwm Llugwy are both peaceful secluded locations to pitch a tent, with impressive surroundings in winter. Wild camping wouldn’t add convenience to the day, but it’d certainly pile on the atmosphere.

Public transport Regular buses linking Capel Curig and Bethesda stop at various points along the A5.

Seasonal notes Minus snow this is simply a long ridge-top stride with a smattering of mild hands-on entertainment – a classic walk, but not mountaineering. To up the ante, wait for a big snowfall. In wild winter weather the narrow ridge sections can be precarious, while the windswept featureless summits pose a different sort of challenge.
